ELK POINT, S.D. -- Leonard Lawrence "Finn" Hoffman, 89, of Elk Point passed away Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point under the care of Hospice of Siouxland following a lengthy illness.

Visitation with the family present will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson-Siecke Funeral Home in Elk Point.

Leonard, the fourth of six children, was born Jan. 10, 1916, to Edward and Lillie (Feauto) Hoffman, in Westfield, Iowa, where he was raised and educated.

He was married to Neva M. McCorkell on Feb. 14, 1938, in Yankton, S.D. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe, receiving the Purple Heart Medal in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, the couple moved to Centerville, S.D., where they owned and operated a hardware, appliance and propane business. Because of his wife's declining health, the couple sold their business and moved to Sacramento, Calif. in 1960. Involved in several business interests, he then retired in 1981 from Sacramento County Parks and Recreation, devoting his life to the care of his wife. In 1990, they returned to South Dakota settling in Elk Point where Neva passed away in 1999.

He was an enthusiastic booster of the community, its school and athletic activities. He was a member of the Federated Church, the Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion, where he served as a commander, a volunteer fireman and a mason. He quietly lived out his life always maintaining his love of hunting, fishing, golfing and an avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Left to cherish the memory of his hearty laugh and zest for life are his daughter and her husband, Theresa and Werner Huiras of Savannah, Ga.; a granddaughter, Gretchen Huiras of Savannah; two sisters, Dorothy Gagner of Monterey Park, Calif., and Irene Prince of Sioux City; a brother, Robert Hoffman of Sioux City; many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Neva; twin daughters and a son who died in infancy; his parents; brothers, Edward and Francis; and sisters, Luella, Leona and Elizabeth.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice of Siouxland in Sioux City.
