Fredrick “Fred” Beck, 73, of Richland, South Dakota, passed away Friday morning, January 4, 2008 at his daughter’s home in Chatsworth, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2008 at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Reverend Dawn Quame of Immanuel Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 1:00 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2008, with the family present after 3:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 4:00 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Fredrick Fritz Beck was born November 4, 1934 in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Fredrick C. and Jennie (Timmer) Beck. He grew up in Hawarden and graduated from Hawarden High School. He served in the United States Army from January 21, 1955 until January 20, 1958. He served his country during the Korean Conflict.

He was united in marriage to Grace Anderson-Baker in August of 1961. They lived in the Hawarden and Chatsworth area. He later married Lenora “Babe” Onnen in November of 1978. They lived in Richland, South Dakota. Fred worked many fields of construction, including Torgenson Roofing and Siding in Sioux City. He also tended bar at Jolly Roger’s in Hawarden. Later, he worked for Higman Sand and Gravel in Akron until his retirement.

He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren; he also enjoyed visiting with his friends and going for rides throughout the countryside. He also enjoyed listening to country music. He will be remembered for sense of humor and always making people laugh. He was a longtime member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his 7 children: Jennifer Beck of Sioux City, IA, Lisa (Bart) Klein of Dunlap, IA, Terry Baker of Beresford, SD, Dara (Robert) Witzka of Chatsworth, IA, Kim Barkley of Sioux City, IA, Thomas (Tae) Baker of Killeen, TX, and David (Debbie) Baker of The Colony, TX; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister: Berna (Tony) Danielson of Hawarden, IA, a brother: Bill (Judy) Beck of Wichita, KS; a sister-in-law: Jan Beck of Phoenix, AZ; his former wife and best friend, Grace Beck; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lenora “Babe” Beck in 1992; two sisters: Ella Herndon and June Sparks; 3 brothers: Jim Beck, George Beck, and Jay Beck on January 3, 2008; and a son-in-law: David Barkley on December 31, 2007.
