Joe Birkley, 52, rural Westfield, died Saturday (Nov. 10, 1984) in St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, Sioux City, after a long illness.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 in the Immanuel Lutheran church in Akron, with the Rev. Benard Nelson officiating. Soloist was Shirley Banks and organist was Cheryl Banks. A special musical selection was sung by the Jerry Thomas family. Graveside services conducted by Rev. Nile Buch, were held at Silver Ridge Cemetery in Ponca, Neb., under the direction of the Schroeder Funeral Home of Akron. Active pallbearers were: Randy Hansen, Travis Bossow, Keith Engel, Lowell Birkley, Robert Kurtz, and Richard Thompson. Honorary pallbears were Dwight Wilcock, Richard Wachter, Dwight Joslin and Donald Banks.

Mr. Birkley was born October 11, 1932 in Maskell, Neb. He married Janet Hinken June 14, 1959 in Dakota City, Neb. He farmed near Jackson, Neb., for six years before moving to a farm south of Westfield. Mr. Birkley was an army veteran of the Korean war and a 20-year member of the Sharing Through Adoption club. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Akron.

Survivors include his wife Janet; three daughters, Mrs. Helen Banks and Penny Birkley, both of Westfield, and Inger Birkley of Minneapolis; three sons, John Birkley, Vance Birkley and Zane Birkley, all of Westfield; two foster sons. Lam Luong and Luc Loung, both of Westfield; a sister, Mardell Kurtz of Gushing; five brothers, Lynn Birkley of Ponca, Neb., Dale Birkley of
South Sioux City, Waldo Birkley of Jackson, Neb.; Raymond Birkley of Hooker, Okla., and Milo of Hubbard, Neb.; five grandchildren, Tracy and Quentin Banks; Billie Joe and Travis Birkley; and Nicole Birkley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Brenda Banks.
