Edward Joseph Zachow, 95, of Richland, South Dakota, passed away Friday, October 19, 2007 at Morningside Manor in Alcester, South Dakota.

Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2007 at Riverside Cemetery in Akron with military rites conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Hospice Chaplin Marie Lykken will officiate. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2007 with a Prayer service at 2:30 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Edward Joseph Zachow was born July 2, 1912 on the family farm in Union County, South Dakota, the son of Christian and Katherine (Eden) Zachow. He attended country school in Union County. He helped his father on the farm before enlisting in the United States Army on September 25, 1942. He served his country during WWII. Upon returning home, he farmed until February of 1946, when he moved to Richland.

He was united in marriage to Wyona Hartwigsen on June 17, 1946 in Elk Point. He owned and operated Edward’s Auto Repair in Richland and was also a farm hand for many years. Later, he went to work for Union County R.E.C. He retired in 1976 after over 20 years of service.

Edward enjoyed playing bingo, refinishing woodwork, and fishing. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of over 61 years, Wyona of Richland, SD; 2 sons: Chris Zachow of Richland, SD, and Gene Zachow and his wife Jeri of Rock Rapids, IA; 3 grandchildren: Terren Zachow and his wife Amanda of Hull, IA, Micheal Zachow of Hawarden, IA, and Andrew Zachow of Cedar Falls, IA; 3 great-grandchildren: Tierra Zachow, Xander Zachow, and Xorian Zachow; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 sisters: Amanda Thiel, Amelia Larson, Alice Anderson, Ida Fickbohm, and Laura Hamilton; and a granddaughter, Crystal Zachow.
