The last civil war veteran of Merrill, Alfred Fletcher, 84 years old. died in his home in Merrill Sunday from infirmities due, to Advanced age.

Mr. Fletcher served in the Eighth Illinois Calvary for about nine months and was mustered out at the close of the war.

He was born in England, January 16, 1845, and lived there until he was 9 years old. With his parents he then came to the United States and settled in Lyons, Iowa. His family then moved to Morrison, Ill., where he lived until 1867. He was married to Mrs. Ann Stinton at Morrison on February 14, 1867. and the same year he returned to Iowa and settled on a homestead in Johnson Township, where he resided for 32 years, when he moved to Merrill.

Mrs. Fletcher preceded him in death five years.

Surviving Mr. Fletcher are: eight daughters, Mrs. Ella Morehead, Akron; Mrs. Ada Morehead, Lebanon, S. D.; Mrs. Minnie Fletcher of Reliance, S. D.; Mrs. Sarah Courtright, of Berry, Minn.; Mrs. Mary Bristow, of Brewster, Minn.; Mrs. Nettie Weinheimer of Hood River, Ore.; Mrs. Mable Albright and Miss Clara Fletcher of Merrill. He is also survived by a sister, 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Merrill Methodist Church with Rev. A. F . Schuldt officiating. Interment was in Adaville Cemetery beside the body of his wife. Mower post G. A. R. of Le Mars was in charge of the funeral at the grave.
