LaVerne R. Dowling, 85, of Hawarden, and formerly of Akron, died Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
LaVerne Rosana Dowling was born June 23, 1920, in Akron, the daughter of Ernest and Anna (Johnson) Anderson. She was baptized into the Christian faith on Aug. 1, 1920, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. She was also confirmed into the Christian faith. She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School. She went to work as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Akron for a few years.

She was united in marriage to Hugh B. Dowling on Feb. 11, 1942, at her parents' farm near Akron. Together, they were the parents of seven children: Ruth Ann, Harold Eugene, John Robert, Richard LeRoy, Ramona Lou, Philip Lee, and June LaVerne. The couple farmed in the Akron area for many years. Hugh died Feb. 25, 1995. Shortly after, she moved to the Ridgewood Apartments in Akron. In 2002, she moved to the Beehive Assisted Living in Hawarden.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron and the W.E.L.C.A. She was also a past president of Luther League. She was a member of the Rural Home Culture Club. As a youth, she was active in 4-H. She also was a member of Gold Star Mothers. She enjoyed baking and cooking. She also enjoyed canning, gardening, and helping her husband on the farm, raising chickens and livestock. But most of all she loved the times spent with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include six children, Ruth Ann Bultman and her husband, Dennis of Hawarden, Harold Eugene Dowling and his wife, Carole of Ramsey, Minn., the Rev. Richard Le Roy Dowling and his wife, Paula of Jefferson, Wis., Ramona Lou Liston and her husband, Dan of McCook Lake, S.D., Philip Lee Dowling of Akron, and June LaVerne Dowling of Le Mars; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Henry Anderson of Sioux City, Milton Anderson and his wife, Mary of Akron, and Stanley Anderson and his wife, Janet of Akron; a sister-in-law, Martha Mae Anderson of Akron; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh; a son, John Robert Dowling; a brother, Russell Anderson; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Anderson.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron with the Rev. Jean Morse officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. today (Monday), with the family present after 6 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Casketbearers will be Jeff Bultman, Matt Dowling, Tony Liston, Brian Plowman, Billy Liston, and Keith Swensen. Honorary casketbearers will be Phil Dowling, Dennis Bultman, Harold Dowling, John Olson, and Dan Liston.
