Cecil L. Crabb, 94, a longtime resident of Kingsley, died Saturday evening, Oct. 2, 2010, at the Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Cecil LaRay Crabb was born Nov. 16, 1915, on a farm at the east end of Diamond Lake, near the Iowa Great Lakes. He was the fifth of six sons born to Albert S. and Jennie M. (Day) Crabb.
In 1939, after graduating high school with a class of five from Luton, Iowa, Cecil attended Morningside College. In 1941, the family purchased several farms north of Kingsley.
Cecil met Wilma Grace Babcock, a cute country school teacher from Moville, and they married on May 30, 1942. Cecil farmed alongside his father and brother for 40 years. Upon retirement, he and Wilma enjoyed 30 winters in Harlingen, Texas.
An avid sportsman, Cecil fished from the lakes of Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and hunted deer in Montana and Wyoming. He especially loved the walleyes, claiming it a favorite food, next to homemade ice-cream and Wilma's chocolate cake.
Cecil and Wilma spent many an hour playing cards with family and friends. He obtained his pilot's license and enjoyed landing on a grass runway at his farm. The couple traveled extensively from coast to coast visiting family and friends.
Cecil joined the Masonic Lodge and became a 32nd degree Mason with 50 years of membership. He was also a Shriner and active in the O.E.S. and served as Worthy Patron.
Cecil's greatest joy were his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Crabb of Char-Mac Assisted Living in Lawton; his six children, Marilyn Turner of Oklahoma City, Okla., Douglas (Connie) Crabb of Mason, Texas, Lowell (Barb) Crabb of Kingsley, Allen (Cecilia) Crabb of Woodbine, Julie (Mike) Grabe of Kingsley, and Dale (Cristina) Crabb of Sheridan, Wyo.; his 14 grandchildren, Clay (Anne) Crabb, Hollie (Conard) Osbourn, Ben (Andrea) Crabb, Aaron (Darcy) Crabb, Tim Crabb, Alicia Crabb, Joshua Crabb, Jessica (Joshua) Hase, Jeff (Kelly) Grabe, Eric (Ellen) Grabe, Jon Grabe, Jamie (Bob) Norman, Anna Crabb and Andrea Crabb; 13 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Wilfred Crabb of Lincoln, Neb. The Van Buskirk girls, now Sally Johnson of Kingsley and Bev Lemke of Paullina, were his special "adopted daughters."
Numerous nieces and nephews, that always loved their summer sojourns at "the farm," and other relatives and friends, will also fondly remember him.
Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Jennie Crabb and his older brothers, Albert Francis, Walter Allen, Wilbur Eugene, and his younger brother, Dr. Dayrle Newton.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev. Roger Kurtenbach officiating. Inurnment will be in the Kingsley Cemetery with Masonic Rites provided by the Cosmos Lodge #470 of Kingsley.
The family will greet relatives and friends, one hour prior to Cecil's service at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley.
Memorial donations may be directed to the family or to the Masonic Cosmos Lodge #470 Scholarship Fund.
