Friday, May 4, 1945SMALTZ FUNERAL ON THURSDAY
Lived In County Over Sixty YearsFuneral rites for J. G. Smaltz at the Mauer Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon were in charge of Rev. John Oerter, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, and the Masonic burial service at the City Cemetery were conducted by the officers of Giblem Lodge, AF & AM.
J. G. Smaltz was born January 6, 1856, at Oxford, Ohio, where his parents had migrated from Germany. The family later moved to Illinois and Mr. Smaltz came to Plymouth County in the early 80’s, farming for a year or two north of Pierson. When the town of Kingsley was established, he engaged in the hardware business there with Charles Knowles, selling out in 1896 and operating a hardware store in Onawa three or four years, locating in LeMars where he has since made his home in 1900.
On May 10, 1889, Mr. Smaltz was married to Carrie G. Schneider, member of another pioneer Kingsley family, who preceded him in death September 26, 1925. Three sons born of this union survive: Alfred of Minneapolis, Arthur and Irving, of LeMars. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Wave Jean Smaltz of Miami, Florida, and John and Jay Smaltz, seniors in LeMars high school.
George Smaltz was one of Plymouth County’s most widely known and highly respected citizens. He had extensive farming interests, was a good business man and was also interested in public affairs, keeping well informed on current topics until a few weeks before his death.
