Magnus Hy. (Henry) Goebel, 91, of Granville, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Magnus was born Jan. 23, 1919, at rural Granville, the son of John and Martha (Bernard) Goebel. He was raised in Granville area and attended St. Joseph Catholic School at Granville. He then assisted his father in farming until he entered the U.S. Army Aug. 19, 1942. He served during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star and five Campaign Stars for service in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland.
On Jan. 29, 1946, he married Leona Thommes at Le Mars. They made their home two miles north of Granville where they were engaged in farming for 64 years up until the time of his death.
Magnus entered the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in January 2010 where he devoted his time and love to his wife Leona. They loved sitting together holding hands and enjoying each other's company.
Magnus was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. V.F.W. and American Legion. He is most remembered by his children for being honest, hard-working and for his faith in God.
Survivors include; His wife Leona of Remsen; Seven children, Leo Goebel and his wife Jackie (Gregory) of Vincent, Robert Goebel and his wife Rita (Pageler) of Granville, Diane (Goebel) Heuertz of Remsen, Mary Ann (Goebel) Van Surksum and her husband Roger of Pensacola, Fla., Donald Goebel and his wife Marian (Pottebaum) of Sioux Falls, S.D., Leonard Goebel of De Soto, KS, and Carol (Goebel) Oolman and her husband Jon of Lead, S.D.; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Firman Goebel and his wife, Rosanne of Worthington, Minn., John Gerald Goebel and his wife, Mary Ann of Granville; three sisters, Joan Loutsch and her husband Ray of Oyens, Arlene McDermott of Kingsley, and Mary Estella Murphy of Cherokee; five sisters-in-law, Angeline Goebel of Worthington, Minn., Katherine Dreckman and her husband, Cletus of Le Mars, Vitelina Penning and her husband, Andrew of Granville, Dorothy Tillotson of Rockford, Ill., and Joan Thommes of Omaha, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Odilo, Ivan and Linus Goebel; a sister, Vivian and her husband Pete Homan; and one brother-in-law, Bill Thommes.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with the Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Graveside military rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. Thursday. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
Casket bearers will be Ronald Heuertz, Joshua, Jeremy and Joe Goebel, Michael Rockwell, and Mike Porter.
