Mildred Lahrs, 89, of Le Mars, formerly of Hinton, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Mildred Louise Bogenrief was born Jan. 3, 1921, in Hinton, the daughter of Adlai and Henrietta (Riediger) Bogenreif. She was raised and educated in Hinton, graduating from Hinton High School in 1939. Mildred later attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., where she received her teaching certificate.
Mildred taught country school in Hungerford Township, Plymouth County, and later in Rock Rapids.
She was united in marriage to Chester Lahrs Aug. 16, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton.
Mildred continued her education at Westmar College in Le Mars where she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in teaching. She taught from 1951 until her retirement in 1974 at Kissinger Elementary School in Merrill. For most of those years, she taught the third grade. She retired after 35 years of teaching.
During her retirement, Mildred continued as a substitute teacher when needed.
Mildred and Chester had been longtime members of Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds, where she volunteered with Lamplighters for several years. She enjoyed playing the piano for Lamplighter functions.
In 2006, Mildred and Chester moved to Le Mars and transferred to Grace Lutheran Church.
She will be remembered for her sewing, quilting, gardening, canning, and baking.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Chester Lahrs of Le Mars; two children, Bruce Lahrs and his wife Diana of Merrill, and Sandy LaBahn and her husband Rod of Le Mars; four grandchildren: Jennifer Burress and her husband Shawn, Ryan Lahrs and his wife Gwendy, Chad LaBahn and his wife Tiffany, and Megan Henning and her husband Chad; eight great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dale Lahrs and his wife Wilma of Louisville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Adlai and Henrietta (Riediger) Bogenreif; and a sister, Irene Jones.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tim Geitz officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation with the family present will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 10 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers will be Chad LaBahn, Chad Henning, Shawn Burress, Ryan Lahrs, Don Stusse, and Don Schneider.
