Carl Willard Peterson, 81, of Enid, Okla., a Union county South Dakota native, died Jan. 27, 1990 in Enid.
Services were held Thursday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. at Nathanael Lutheran church in Alcester. Rev. Robert Jones officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Alcester, under direction of the Wass Home for Funerals of Alcester.
Pallbearers were Dennis Hultgren, Melvin Johnson, Stuart Newberg, Glen Johnson, Paul Newberg and Vernold Olson.
Soloist was Lois Sundstrom. Organist was Gertrude Lapour.
Mr. Peterson was born Nov. 7, 1908, in Union County, South Dakota to John and Sophie Peterson. He grew up in the Alcester area and graduated in 1927 from the Alcester High School. He attended the Pasadena State University. He married Melinda Olson June 7, 1942, in Volin. The couple farmed in the Alcester area until 1961 at which time Willard went to work for the South Dakota Highway Department in Beresford. In 1967, the couple moved to Brookings, where he continued working for the highway department before retiring in 1973. Melinda died in January of 1988 and Willard continued living in Brookings until June of 1989, at which time he moved to Enid, Okla. to be closer to his daughter. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings.
Survivors include two sons, Steven of Hartford, Conn, and Ward of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Ann (Mrs. James) Bryant of Enid, Okla. and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, John, who was killed in Vietnam in 1968 (he is one of five Vietnam veterans who lost their lives in Vietnam pictured on the local memorial in the Akron Legion hall); two brothers and two sisters.
