Carl W. "Chuck" Mammen, 99, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.

Carl William Mammen was born Aug. 25, 1911, on a farm in Grant Township, Plymouth County, the son of Charles H. and Anne (Borchers) Mammen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township), rural Le Mars. He attended country school near his home.

Chuck and Vera Grosenheider were united in marriage March 30, 1937. The couple farmed in Grant Township four years. They then moved to a farm in Stanton Township, Plymouth County. In 1967 Chuck and Vera moved to Le Mars. Chuck continued to farm until his retirement in 1973.

Chuck was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He served for two terms on church council and ushered at funerals for more than 30 years.

Farming was more than an occupation to Chuck, it was his life. He enjoyed being outdoors with nature, his livestock and crops, and watching birds.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 73 years, Vera Mammen of Le Mars; two daughters, Joanne North of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Wanda Mammen of Le Mars; five nieces and nephews, Lennice (Pete) Rohlfs, Donald (Gayla) Kruse, Bob (Barb) Doering, Mark (Barb) Doering, and Cheryl Doering.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Elmer Mammen; two sisters, Alice Kruse and Minnie Doering; a sister-in-law, Irene Mammen; two brothers-in-law, William Kruse and Marvin Doering; and a son-in-law, Charles North.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars, with the family present to greet friends from 3-5 p.m. Visitation will resume at 1 p.m. Monday at the church.
