James "Jim" Netley, 63, of Dakota Dunes, S.D., died unexpectedly Monday, Aug. 30, 2010 near Akron.
James Bruce Netley was born Feb. 28, 1947, in Akron, the son of Arthur and Ninon (Haddock) Netley. He attended Ruble country school and later high school in Akron. He graduated from Akron High School in 1965. He attended Westmar College in Le Mars and graduated with his teaching certificate in 1969.
He began his 38-year career as a teacher and a coach at Ar-We-Va Community School in Westside. He later taught at Harlan Community School before moving closer to home to teach in the Sioux City Community School District. Not only did Jim take great pride in the education of his students, his passion for football as a youngster continued through his years of coaching young men on the field. Jim retired from teaching and coaching in 2007.
During Jim's first marriage, he was blessed with three daughters, Jennifer, Amy and Holly.
On Sept. 4, 1999, Jim was united in marriage to Beverly Van Donge Swift at Adaville United Methodist Church. With this marriage, came the addition of Beverly's two children into Jim's life, Jennifer and Michael.
Jim's greatest pleasure in life was the time spent with his children and, later in life, his grandchildren.
Jim and Beverly were looking forward to building a home on the family farm near Ruble, Iowa to enjoy their retirement.
Faith was always an active part of Jim's life. Through his affiliations with several churches through the years, Jim always placed his faith and the importance of God first. He was always sharing that belief with his children and grandchildren.
Jim cherished the trips to the family cabin in the Northwoods of Minnesota. He loved to go fishing, boating, snowmobiling, and riding his motorcycle. He was an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Jim touched so many hearts through the years, whether it was teaching, coaching, or sharing his love of God. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Beverly of Dakota Dunes, S.D.; his three daughters and their families: Jennifer Olson (James) of Dakota Dunes, S.D., and their daughters, Shelby and Callie, Amy Powers (Dan) of Polk City, and their daughter, Hannah, and Holly Netley of Remsen, and her son, Keeshon; Beverly's children and their families: Jennifer McArthur (Jonathan) of Jacksonville, Fla., and their daughters, Rebecca and Elizabeth, and Michael Swift (Rachel) of Pensacola, Fla.; his siblings: Judy Keith (Les) of Pryor, Okla., Melinda Heiderscheit (Michael) of Pryor, Okla., and Kevin Netley (Pam) of Akron; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ninon (Haddock) Netley.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Adaville United Methodist Church, 21150 C-38, rural Merrill. The Rev. Lee Crum and the Rev. Fred Gums will officiate. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Merrill. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Thursday with the family present after 5 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Adaville United Methodist Church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Casketbearers will be Kevin Netley, Jr., Richard Netley, Dan Pomerenke, Keith Brandt, Andrew Netley, Milo Sprout, and Richard Gaumer.
The Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron, is in charge of arrangements.
