Gregory Schlichte, 79, of Craig, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2010, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

Gregory Joseph Schlichte was born Dec. 7, 1930, on the family farm near Granville, the son of Joseph and Cora (Penning) Schlichte. He attended country school near Granville.

Greg farmed for a few years with his dad and then moved to Sioux City to work as a brick layer. Greg was proud that he had helped build a bank in Sioux City, a school in Denison and a gymnasium onto the school in Granville.

Greg married Alice Mae Ahlers Oct. 1, 1951, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville. Following their marriage,the couple moved to Lake Park where he continued his trade as a bricklayer and helped build a school. Later the couple moved to Sioux City where Greg helped build Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

When his father died, Greg and Alice returned home to farm. Greg worked for John Deegan on his farm near Struble four years before moving to the Craig area to farm on his own in 1957. They lived on the farm until December 1988, when they moved to Craig, but continued to farm.

His wife Alice Mae died March 25, 2006.

In his retirement, Greg helped his children wherever needed.

Greg was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble for 56 years and was a member of its finance board. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and a past board member of the Plymouth County Co-op.

Greg was a seed corn salesman for Lester-Pfizer Seed Corn for many years.

He enjoyed playing cards with friends and watching and attending Minnesota Vikings and Twins games. He also loved to attend cattle sales throughout the Midwest.

Survivors include five children: Dennis (Cindy) Schlichte of Le Mars, Jeannine Schlichte of Le Mars, Jerome (Nancy) Schlichte of Brunsville, William (Beth) Schlichte of Le Mars and Joyce Ludwigs of Craig; a daughter-in-law, Cindy (Berner) Schlichte of Merrill; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters and their spouses: Clifford and Dolly Schlichte of Granville, Lorraine and Darrell Berkenpas of Le Mars, Odelo and Verna Schlichte of Everly, Bernard and Elaine Schlichte of Avoca, Minn., Charlotte and Danny Hoag of Kansas City, Kan., Ruth and Bob Hoffman of Archer, and Mary Jo and Ron Olson of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Hazel (Schlichte) Morris of Seattle, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alice Mae, March 25, 2006; a daughter, Karen in infancy; a son, Kenneth on May 23, 2006; a son-in-law, Barry Ludwigs on Oct. 19, 2004; and a brother Pat Schlichte.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. today (Tuesday) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville, with the Rev. Dan Greving and the Rev. Richard Ball as celebrants. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Granville. Visitations began at 3 p.m. Monday at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there was a rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation was also one hour prior to the Mass Tuesday morning at St. Joseph's Church in Granville.

Pallbearers were Chad Schlichte, Brodi Ludwigs, Christopher Schlichte, Nicholas Schlichte, Kari Gengler, and Kenzi Ludwigs.
