Phyllis J. Smith, 81, Le Mars, died Thursday, June 4, 1992, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.
Services were June 8 at St. John's American Lutheran church in Le Mars. Rev. Gary Landsness officiated. Burial was at Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, under direction of Mauer-Johnson funeral home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Smith was born March 18, 1911, in Grant township, Plymouth county, to Jess and Maude (Phillips) Peebles. She attended rural grade school, and Craig and Ireton high school. She married Ray P. Smith Sept. 13, 1930, in Le Mars. She was a homemaker after her marriage. In later years, she worked at the Wal-Dor Café and Sweet 16 Lanes in Le Mars. Her husband died in 1953.
Survivors include a son, Ronald, and his wife, Ina; two daughters, Beverly and her husband, Herman Kowalke Jr., Janice and her husband, Richard Gaul, all of Le Mars; 10 grandchildren, Sharon and her husband, Richard Cargin, Susan and her husband, Paul Betsworth, Elsie and her husband, James SailoVt.Dianne and her husband, John Boger, Rita' and her husband, David Vander Feen,' Joe Smith and his wife, Cheryl, Kathy and her husband, Steve Sitzmann, Mark Gaul and his wife, Maxine, Theresa and her husband, Michael Pierson, and Julie Gaul; 26 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Elliott of Le Mars; a brother, Ralph Peebles of Chandler, Ariz.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Ray Jr.; a grandson, Steve Kowalke; two brothers, Byron and Glenn; and a sister, Maxine Jones.
