Clara Gerhardena Oetken, 89, of Le Mars died Monday, Nov. 23,1998, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 25, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, Iowa, with the Rev. Peter Boe officiating. Burial was in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery.

Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, Le Mars was in vharge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Brett, Todd, Craig and Jeff Oetken, Scott Held and Merle Shay.

Mrs. Oetken was born June 11, 1909, in Grant Township, the daughter of Adolph and Clara (Kruse) Popken. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended country school in Grant Township.

She married George B. Oetken on Feb. 6, 1932, rural Akron, Iowa. The couple farmed in Plymouth County, retiring in 1980, and moved to Le Mars. He died Feb. 21,1993.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A., the Bible Study and 4 Seasons Garden
Club of Brunsville.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Beverly and Thomas Held of Hinton, Iowa; two sons and their wives, Alwayne and Kathleen of Le Mars arid Warren and Sheryl of Merrill, Iowa; three sisters, Hilda Renken, Helen Popken and Amanda Haage; all of Le Mars; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Popken; five sisters, Dora Westhoff, Alma Onken, Emma Westhoff, Della Dirks and Tena in infancy; and a great-grandson.
