Clara A. "Toots" Smithson, 95, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010. at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Clara Annis Bevans was born July 15, 1915, in Stanford, Colo., the daughter of Benjamin and Ruth (Schrock) Bevans. She graduated from Poly High School in Long Beach, Calif.

On July 1, 1939, Clara "Toots" and Charles Gale Smithson were united in marriage in Las Vegas, Nev. They made their home in Long Beach, Calif.

Clara and Charles started a one way rental/moving business called San Pedro Equipment Company which is still in business today. Charles died in 1954 and Clara sold the business to the present owners. Clara remained in Long Beach and raised her family.

In 1992 she moved to Le Mars, with her son George and his family.

Some of Clara's hobbies were embroidery, listening to music, gardening, and playing cards and bingo. Clara resided at the Abbey of Le Mars before moving to Plymouth Manor Care Center.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, George Smithson and his wife Nancy of Le Mars; a daughter-in-law, Sandy (Mrs. Charles) Smithson of Yorba Linda, Calif.; grandchildren Tim and Shari Morgan of Danville, Calif., Shelly and Robin Smithson of Yorba Linda, Calif., George Jr. and Tracy Smithson of Surprise, Ariz., Greg and Heather Smithson of Surprise, Ariz., and Travis and Julie De Boer of Le Mars; great-grandchildren Tyler, Drew, Dylan, Jazmen, Melany, Drake, Logan, Nate, Micah, and Noah Smithson, Sierra, Skylar, and Gage De Boer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; and a brother, Donald Bevans.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The Rev. Jason Larson of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars will officiate. Burial will follow at a later date. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the funeral home and will continue until service time.
