Owen, Clara 1885-1954

Clara Owen, whose home was at 235 1st Ave. N . W., prominent Le
Mars business woman and civic leader many years, passed away Thursday
afternoon at the Sacred Heart hospital after a long sickness. Mrs.
Owen had been in failing health for the past three years. She was 69
years of age. Her birthdate was January 31, 1885.

Deceased established the Clara Owen Shop here in 1954. Later
also owned and operated the Tots and Teens Shop. She sold this
store in 1952 and in 1954 sold theClara Owen Shop, which still
operates under her name.

Mrs. Owen, the daughter of the late Michael and Clara Nemmers,
was active in the Catholic Daughters of America and was a Past Grand
Regent. She was also Past DistrictDeputy of this organization, She was
a member of the Business and Professional Women’s club and Catholic
Ladies club and Third Order of St. Francis.

Funeral services were held at 9:00 a.m. Monday November 8, (today)
al St. Joseph's Catholic church. Burial was in Calvary cemetery under
direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home.

Three nephews, Rev. Reinhard Nemmers of Charter Oak, Iowa;
Rev. Leonard Nemmers of Salem, S D.; and Rev. Charles Nemmers
of Bridgewater, S. D. said the Solemn Requiem Mass.

Survivors are four brothers, Joseph Nemmers of Dell Rapids, South
Dakota; Al. John and Nick Nemmers of Le Mars and several nieces
and nephews.

Present at funeral services today for Mrs. Owen was Msgr. Father
Tiltgen of Ossian, Iowa, for whom the deceased was flower girl at the
time of his ordination.

She was preceded in death by her .parents and four sisters, Anna Fischbach,
Elizabeth Kircher, Marie Toller and Helen Umhofer. Pallbearers were
six nephews, Elmer Nemmers, Orville Nemmers,
John Nemmers, Pete Ginsbach, John Nemmers and John Page.

Honorary pallbearers, Jim Waite, Paul Nuebel, R. Barker, George
Mount, Otto Vollmar and Rome Starzl, Frank Hentges, Dr. R. J.
Joynt.

Clara Owens, 69, founder of the Clara Owen Shop and Tots and
Teens shop in Le Mars, died Nov 4 at Sacred Heart hospital after
an illness of three years. Services were Monday with burial in Le
Mars. A successful business woman, in fashions, Mrs. Owen
also was a civic leader in the community. Born in Le Mars, she
held key positions for the Bell Telephone Co. in Council Bluffs
and Seattle, Wash., and a Canadian telephone company between
1905 and 1915. She opened the Clara Owen Shop, Le Mars, in
1933, and sold it this year. She had sold Tots and Teens in 1952
because of ill health. Surviving are four brothers; Al, John and
Nick Nemmers of Le Mars, and Joseph Nemmers of Dell Rapids,
S.D .
