Le Mars, Iowa – Edith Baier, 86, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2010, at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 2010, at the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Randall, Iowa. No public visitation is planned.

Edith M. Baier, the daughter of Lou and Jennie (Hovland) Baier, was born January 29, 1924, at the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa. She grew up in Ames and graduated from Ames High School in 1941. Edith furthered her education in the nurse training program at Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, from 1942 until 1945. While in school, the program became the St. Luke’s School of Nursing. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1945. Edith returned to Ames, and worked as a R.N. on the surgical floor at the Mary Greeley Hospital.

In 1947, Edith moved to Los Angeles, California, where she worked for seven years at the Georgia Street Hospital, which was an emergency care hospital. Due to health reasons, Edith returned to Ames, and two years later, went back to work on the surgical floor at the Mary Greeley Hospital.

Following the death of her parents, Edith moved to Peterson, Iowa. She was employed at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee for approximately two years, then chose to retire.

Edith lived at the Abbey in Le Mars, Iowa for 26 years, and in March of 2005, she moved to the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, where she was a resident until her death.

Edith is survived by two nephews, Gene (Kristin) Baier of Moville, IA and Jerry (Shirley) Baier of Sioux Rapids, IA; and her many caregivers and friends.

Preceding Edith in death are her parents Lou and Jennie Baier and her brother, Lamont Baier.
