HINTON, Iowa -- Donald Warren Broten, 72, of Hinton passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at his residence.
Abiding by his wishes, the body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
Donald was born May 26, 1938, in Park Ridge, Wis., to Warren and Adeline Broten.
He married his high school sweetheart, Kaye Daniels, in Stevens Point, Wis., on June 6, 1959. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Bismarck, N.D., where their four children were born. Following moves to Fargo, N.D., and Watertown, S.D., they settled in Hinton, where he eventually retired from AT&T.
He was actively involved in ham radio until the evolution of the computer. He enjoyed working on the computer and helped others in learning how to use them. He loved retirement, especially spending time with his family and their dog, Lucky. He served on the Hinton City Council for many years and never lost interest in the city's government.
He is survived by his wife, Kaye; four children, Sue (Gary) Klabo of Aberdeen, S.D., Sally (John) Kuhnert of Brandon, S.D., Scott (Melody) Broten of Laguna Hills, Calif., and Sandi Wells of Hinton; a sister, Jean (Butch) Wagner of Green Bay, Wis.; six grandchildren, Rob Wells, Alex Klabo, Allison Klabo, Ashley Klabo, Jeremy Broten and Dylan Broten; and two stepgrandchildren, Shawn Kuhnert and Scott Kuhnert.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to thank Siouxland Hospice and Dr. Greg Halbur for the loving care they gave to Don during his last weeks.
