Sioux City
man dies of
crash injuries

Otto H. Backer. 55. Sioux City,
who at first was not considered
as seriously injured in a one-
car accident near Hinton. died
early Tuesday apparently of injuries.
Dr. Thomas L. Coriden,
Woodbury county medical examiner,
said after an autopsy.

Dr. Coriden added that a complete
report on the death was
not available, but the death
will be attributed to injuries suffered
in the mishap.

Mr. Backer died while undergoing
surgery for a neck injury
believed suffered in the
accident, but which was not
considered "serious."

Mr. Backer's stepson, Larry
Porsch, 23, of the same address,
a passenger in the car, was
considered in "good" condition
at Sioux City St. Joseph Mercy
hospital Tuesday night.

Mr. Backer was driving on
Plymouth county road L about
a mile and three-quarters west
of Hinton when the car apparently
went out of control and
missed a curve, according to
Iowa Highway Patrolman David
Hays of Le Mars, who investigated.
The patrolman said the
car rolled once and Mr. Backer
and Mr. Porsch were pinned in
the car, but there was no difficulty
in removing them. They
were taken to the Sioux City
hospital by Luken ambulance of
Le Mars.

Mr. Backer was born Nov. 13,
1910, in Davenport, and he
farmed for several years near
Smithland. His wife, Louise, died
early this year. He married
Hilda Porsch Sept. 3, 1966, in
Sioux City. He was a member
of Concordia Lutheran church
and the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors are the widow; four
stepsons, Walter Jones of Pendleton,
Ore., Larry Porsch,
Kenneth Porsch and Alvin
Porsch, all of Sioux City; two
stepdaughters, Mrs. Sylvia
Schutlz of Hinton, and Mrs.
Katherine Johnson of Sioux
City one brother, Chris of Cheyenne,
Wyo.; one sister, Mrs.
Clara Denhe of Merced, Calif.,
and seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1
p.m. Thursday at Concordia
Lutheran church, Sioux City.

Rev. R. C. Raedeke will offi-
ciate. Burial will be in Beleve-
dere Cemetery at Turin.
