Eunice X. Schmid, 91, of Kingsley, died Sunday afternoon, May 23, 2010, at the Kingsley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Eunice Xaveris Schmid was born Nov. 9, 1918, on her grandparents' James and Leah Thoms farm, rural Le Mars. She was the first of two daughters born to Homer and Emma (Frisch) Thoms. Eunice grew up in the Le Mars and Merrill area and graduated from Merrill High School in 1936.
On Nov. 15, 1941, Eunice was united in marriage to Ernest Schmid. The couple farmed near Merrill and Westfield, prior to moving to the Kingsley area in 1945.
Eunice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker.
Some of her hobbies and interests included sewing, vegetable gardening, canning, solving crossword puzzles, crafting and playing cards.
Eunice was a wonderful cook. Her grandchildren phoned often throughout the years, to claim some of her special recipes and cooking tips. Eunice's children recall that their mother made the best-ever rice pudding and rhubarb custard pie.
Eunice was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Kingsley, where she also was active in the Ladies Aide. For numerous years, she was a member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau and the Elkhorn Township Farm Bureau Ladies.
Eunice is survived by her four children, Carol Ohlendorf of Omaha, Neb., LaMont Schmid and his wife, Karen, Dennis Schmid and his wife, Maureen, and Roger Schmid and his wife, Diane, all of Kingsley; her sister, Lorraine Durr of Merrill; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
Preceding Eunice in death were her husband, Ernest Schmid in April 2001; and her parents, Homer and Emma Thoms.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the First Lutheran Church in Kingsley, with the Rev. Duane Miesner officiating. Interment will be in the Kingsley City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the family present from 5-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. The visitation will continue on Friday at the First Lutheran Church, one hour prior to Eunice's service.
