Maxine Staab, 86, of Remsen, died Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Maxine was born Nov. 25, 1923, at Marcus, the daughter of Guido and Edith (Cox) Berendes. She was raised in the Marcus area and attended Holy Name Catholic School until her junior year in high school when she moved with her family to Remsen. She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Remsen in 1942. She then attended St. Joseph's Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City She graduated in 1945 with a degree in nursing.
On Nov. 20, 1945, she married Roman Staab at Remsen. The couple made their home on a farm north of Remsen. In January 1993 they moved into the town of Remsen. She entered the Happy Siesta Health Care Center November 2006.
Maxine loved to play cards, fishing, quilting, embroidery, she was a fantastic cook, she also liked going to cattle sales with her husband Roman and kept daily market logs.
According to Roman, Maxine was a fabulous dancer. They attended many dances in the area, especially on Thursday night which was a common thing to do in the Remsen area.
Survivors include her husband, Roman of Remsen; four sons, Jim Staab, and his wife Rosie, Jerry Staab and his wife, Barb, all of Remsen, Pat Staab and his wife, Claudette of Marcus, Joe Staab of Remsen; 11 grandchidren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann Beck of Remsen; four sisters-in-law, Shirley Berendes of Castle Rock, Colo., Fern Staab of Remsen, Helen Wiederholt of Le Mars, and Rita Mary and her husband Ed Schaaf of Eugene, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jack and Don Berendes; four brothers-in-law, Harry Beck, Vitus Wiederholt, Emil Schilmoeller and Ervin Staab; and two sisters-in-law, Doris Rielly and Elizabeth Schilmoeller.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 2 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument LLC in Remsen.
Pallbearers will be John, Nick, Mark, Mike, Matt, Jeff and Russ Staab.
Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home and Monument in Remsen.
