Shirley Erichsen, 85, of Remsen, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, surrounded by her family, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Shirley was born July 11, 1924 at Le Mars, the daughter of John and Ella (Phelen) Ostert. Shirley was raised on a farm south of Le Mars and received her early education at Union School, rural Le Mars. The family then moved into Le Mars where she continued her education at Le Mars Community School.

On June 1, 1945, she married Delmar F. Klaschen at Remsen. They made their home near Remsen. They later moved to Wolsey, S.D., where they farmed until his death on Feb. 4, 1957. Shortly thereafter she, along with their two daughters, moved back to Remsen where she was employed at Bob's IGA grocery store.

On Aug. 21, 1959, she married George Erichsen at Marcus. They made their home on the Erichsen family farm near Remsen, which they took over sole operation of.

In 1990 they retired and moved into Remsen.

She had been a resident of Happy Siesta since February 2009.

Shirley was a member of Christ Lutheran Church LCMS and Christ Lutheran Ladies Aid. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years and a past member of Jolly Bidders Card Club and also a craft club.

She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, canning and spending time with her family and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren played a major role in her life.

Survivors include her husband, George of Remsen; two daughters and their husbands, Sandra and Gary Schmid, and Marcia and Ted Nothem, all of Remsen; six grandchildren, Shelly and her husband James Thomson, Jason and his wife Theresa Schmid, Melissa and her husband Brian Juhl, all of Remsen, Troy Nothem of Dalles, Texas, Lori and her husband Ashton Synder of Houston, Texas, and Todd Nothem and his wife Steph of Remsen; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen, with the Rev. Dennis Martens officiating. Burial was in the Remsen Community Cemetery. Visitation was after 4 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Christ Lutheran Church LCMS in Remsen. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home and Monument of Remsen.

Casketbearers were James Thomson, Jason Schmid, Brian Juhl, Troy Nothem, Ashton Synder and Todd Nothem.
