Florence Oltmanns, 96, of Le Mars, died Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Florence Katherine Oltmanns was born Nov. 18, 1913, on the family farm in Johnson Township near Merrill, the daugher of August and Katheryn (Ohlrichs) Herzberg. Florence was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Johnson Township. Florence attended country school near her home.
Florence was united in marriage to Bert Baack in 1936, who died tragically in an airplane accident shortly after they were married. She later married Charlie Oltmanns June 30, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Merrill. The couple farmed east of Craig for many years. Charlie died on May 28, 1968. Florence remained on the farm until moving to Le Mars in 1972.
Florence worked for a number of years in the early 1970s for the Le Mars Hatchery. In 1994, she moved to Sunrise Villa in Le Mara and later to Plymouth Manor Care Center in 1999.
Florence had a wonderful personality and will be remembered for being very spirited.
She had been involved with her church in Craig for many years. She participated with WELCA and also volunteered wherever needed.
Florence enjoyed family functions with her siblings and nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed gardening and quilting.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Leona Herzberg of Le Mars; three nieces and a nephew, Carmen and Wendell Gronemeyer of St. James, Minn., Judy and Edgar Nicholson of Le Mars, Mark and Deb Herzberg of Merrill, and Mary Kay (James) Livermore of Le Mars.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Bert Baack and Charlie Oltmanns; a brother, Elmer "Bud" Herzberg; and four sisters, Clara Wetrosky, Rose Croon, Gerldine Johnson, and Lillian as a young girl.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Craig, with the Rev. Sarah Nye officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be after 11 a.m. until service time at the church. The Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
