Kevin Douglas Reed, 50, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully at his home Monday, March 15, 2010, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Kevin was born in Iowa City, Nov. 28, 1959, to Joe D. and Gloria (Grose) Reed. He graduated from Le Mars Community High School where he participated in football, basketball and baseball. He graduated from Westmar College in Le Mars in 1982.
He began his teaching career in Goldfield, where he also coached volleyball and basketball for three years. He then moved to the Des Moines area in 1985 and joined the Dallas Center-Grimes faculty as a social studies teacher. While at DC-G, he coached girls' basketball, volleyball and golf. He was an assistant girls' basketball coach most recently at Roosevelt High School in Des Moines for four years, during which time they were crowned state champions.
He was also a coach for several years for the Iowa Stars, a 12 and Under Baseball All Star team that competed in the National Baseball Congress World Series.
His children were an important part of his life and he enjoyed following their activities whether it be academics, music or sports.
Kevin will always be remembered as being a passionate teacher who made history come alive in his classroom. Regardless of his students' interest in learning about history, he made it appealing to them.
He was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, New York Yankees, Jimmy Buffet, and Neil Diamond.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Dana; his children, Keegan and Kileigh; mother, Gloria (Grose) Reed, of Florence, Ariz.; sister, Kellie and her husband, Travis Groft, and their two children, Wally and Lucy, of Lincoln, Neb.; stepchildren, Megan and Dave Woolworth; and a host of many other loving family members and friends.
Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Joe D. Reed; and paternal and maternal grandparents.
In agreement with Kevin's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. The family will greet friends from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel in Des Moines. A memorial service celebrating Kevin's life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Dallas Center - Grimes High School Gymnasium in Grimes. Private committal services will take place at a later date.
The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to: American Cancer Society, Mercy Hospice or to Dallas Center-Grimes Schools.
