Violet Steichen, 87, of Maurice, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

The former Violet Marie Kuecker was born Dec. 20, 1922, near Maurice, the daughter of Dan and Nellie (Gysbertsen) Kuecker. She was raised in the Maurice area and attended rural school and high school in Maurice.

She married Alphonse J. Steichen Dec. 20, 1940, at Seaforth, Minn. The couple farmed in the Seaforth area for 10 years and then moved to the Maurice area, where they continued farming. In 1960 they moved from the farm into Maurice.

She also worked for 15 years as a med aide and a nurses aide at the County Home in Orange City and at The Abbey of Le Mars. Her husband, Al Steichen, died July 29, 1995.

Mrs. Steichen was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Altar-Rosary Society in Struble. She also belonged to two different card clubs.

Survivors include two daughters: Janice Plendl and her friend, Francis Wendt, of Remsen, and Karen Westcott and her husband Wayne, of Ireton; a son Glen Steichen and his wife Peggy ,of Remsen; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Kuecker, of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Alphonse Steichen; a son-in-law, LeRoy Plendl; a brother in infancy, Kenneth Alphonse Steichen; and two sisters: Helen Koopman Williams and Dorothy Wanningen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Church in Struble, where there will be a rosary by the Altar-Rosary Society at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Saturday morning. Arrangements are with the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Pallbearers will be Scott Plendl, Todd Plendl, Troy Plendl, Jason Westcott, Kyle Plendl and Austin Schmidt.
