Wallace H. "Wally" Heeren, 82, of Kingsley, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Wallace Harold Heeren, the son of Harm F. and Emma (Peters) Heeren, was born March 11, 1927, in Le Mars. He attended rural country school near Le Mars.

Wallace entered into active duty in the United States Navy May 2, 1945, and served his country during World War II aboard the USS St. Louis. After honorably and faithfully completing his duties, Wallace was formally discharged from the service June 22, 1946.

April 6, 1947, Wallace was united in marriage to Bernice M. Hoffman. They farmed west of Kingsley for a few years then moved to a home in town.

Wally operated his own corn shelling business and, in September of 1971, opened "Heeren Machine Shop." He was an accomplished engine mechanic and welder. Wally eventually sold the business to Loren Koch, and continued to work for "Koch Automotive" until his retirement.

Some of Wally's interests included playing the organ and piano, and in his earlier years, the saxophone. He enjoyed animals and pets throughout his life. Wally had a great fascination of trying to decipher the various odds of winning the lottery, and was known to be quite the storyteller.

Wally is survived by his daughter, Michelle and Clint Leonard, of Remsen; his son, Monte and Terri Heeren, of Grimes; his granddaughter, Mandy Heeren; his grandson, Cody Leonard; his sister, Ramona and David Ludwigs, of Le Mars, and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Heeren in August 2008; his parents; Harm and Emma Heeren, and his brother and sister-in-law, Harlan and Rose Heeren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev. Gary McDonough officiating. Interment will be in the Kingsley City Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Kingsley-Nash American Legion Post #140.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Johnson-Earnest Funeral Home, with the family present from noon until the 2 p.m. service.
