J. Maxine Powell, 89, of Waukee, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Methodist West Hospital.

Maxine was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Dexter, the daughter of Omer and Christena Little. She graduated from Guthrie Center High School.

She married Joseph William Powell at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on Easter Sunday April 25, 1943.

They resided in Cedar Falls from 1943-1959, in Le Mars, from 1959-1974, and in Waukee since 1974. Maxine worked at the Le Mars Flower House, the Le Mars Daily Sentinel and Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance before retiring in 1984.

She was active in the Waukee Women's Club, was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Waukee United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Hillcrest Country Club.

Maxine is survived by her daughter Nancy Powell of Alexandria, Va.; a grandson Christopher Powell of Plano, Texas, and four nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, her husband Joe and sons Richard (1944) and William (2008).

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at McCalley Funeral Home in Adel. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at McCalley Funeral Home where family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
