Nick L. Manning, 61, of Le Mars, passed away surrounded by his family Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City.

Nicholas LaVerne Manning was born April 8, 1948, in Sioux City, the son of Milo and Margaret Jean (Dennler) Manning. Nick was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars Central High School with the Class of 1967. Nick served his country during the Vietnam Conflict from June of 1968 until his honorable discharge March 6, 1970. Nick was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Good Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.

Nick and Marlene Majeres were married October 19, 1968, in Le Mars.

Nick was employed with Wells' Dairy at the milk plant for 32 years. He worked at the plant in several capacities and for the last several years was maintenance supervisor.

His family was very important to him. Nick enjoyed the outdoors going camping, fishing, hunting and boating with family and friends. In later years, Nick enjoyed being "Grandpa" to his 12 grandchildren. Nick enjoyed going on the annual "Christmas shopping trip" with his brother Dale.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Marlene, of Le Mars; five children and 12 grandchildren: Shawn Schiefen and her husband Matt, of Merrill, and their children Chris, Brianna, Olivia, and Samantha, Shane Manning and his wife Jill, of Cedar Falls, and their daughter Ella, Dawn Hoebelheinrich and her husband Pat, of Le Mars, and their children Brittany, Kaitlyn, Alyssa, and Riayn, Troy Manning and his wife Erica, of Le Mars, and their children Damion, Dominique, Isabella and Amber Busche and her husband Aaron, of Memphis, Tenn.; four brothers, Dale Manning and his wife Teresa, of Merrill, Milo Dean Manning, of Le Mars, Larry Manning of Fredric, Wis., and Bob and Ginny Manning, of Marcus; a sister, Donna Mamey, of Palm Springs, Calif.; in-laws: Dennis and Deanna Majeres, of Decatur, Ill., Brian and Pat Majeres, Lavonne and Dave Ott and Myron and Margaret Majeres, all of Le Mars; and several nieces, and nephews.

Nick is preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Margaret Jean (Dennler) Manning; a brother Tom Manning; and his mother and father-in-law, Blanche and Melvin Majeres.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars with the Rev. Jan Christensen officiating. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Friday at the church with the family present to greet friends after 5 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Shane Manning, Troy Manning, Pat Hoebelheinrich, Matt Schiefen, Aaron Busche and Chris Slothower.
