Lester G. Johnson, 60, prominent area farmer and longtime civic and church leader of Rural Route 4, Le Mars, lA, died on Saturday, April 7, 1990 as a result of an accident at his farm home southeast of Craig.

Services were held on Tuesday afternoon, April 10, 1990 in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church at Craig. lA, the Reverend Beth Graham offici­ating. Burial was in the church ceme­tery under the direction of the Mauer­-Johnson Funeral Home at Le Mars.

Mr. Johnson, a lifelong Plymouth County resident, was born on June 6, 1929 in Plymouth County, the son of Onno and Anna (Popken) Johnson. He and Edna Lubben were united in marriage on August 14, 1949 at Christ Lutheran Church in Grant Township.

Mr. Johnson was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran. Church at Craig, and held many offices in the church. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Craig School Board, served on the Farmer's Co-Op Elevator Board, the Co-Op Gas and Oil Board, served for 10 years on the NIPCO Board of Directors, and received the Master Farmer Award in 1975. A 25-year REC member, he was currently serving as president of the Plymouth County REC Board of Directors.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Kent Jones of Le Mars, Mary and Verdayne Brandenburg of Sioux Falls, SD, and Kathy and Conrad Hoffsommer of Decorah, IA; four granddaughters, Jennifer and Rachel Bran­denburg, and Bethany and Corinne Jones; two sisters and brothers-in-law Velda and LaVerne Benson of Rapid City, SD, and Lucille and Fred Tanner of Hartley, IA; a sister-in-law, Lois Johnson of rural Le Mars; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Melvin.
