Le Mars, Iowa - Ernest Popken, 73, of Le Mars, died Saturday (October 3, 1987) in a care center in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. John’s American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. David Kramer will officiate. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Craig. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today with a prayer services at 7:30 p.m. in Maurer-Johnson Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Brown will officiate.

Mr. Popken was born October 16, 1913, in Grant Township, Plymouth County. He married Ruth Boisen February 9, 1939, at Ireton. The couple farmed until 1970 when they moved into Le Mars. From 1971 until 1981 he was employed with Brangwin Construction as a carpenter.

Survivors include his wife: three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Evelyn) Nelson of Newcastle, Nebraska, Mrs. Harold (Elaine) Faber of South Sioux City and Mrs. Richard (Donna) Klaasen of Omaha; a brother, George of Le Mars. Two sisters, Mrs. Adeline Janssen and Mrs. Elsie Rolfes, both of Le Mars; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
