Carole Lee (Haines) Popken, 74, of Hawarden, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, June 15, with her family by her side, following a long battle with cancer.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Associated Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. V. Howard Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mrs. Popken was born in Hawarden on April 11, 1934, the daughter of Que and Nina (Handy) Haines.
She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1952. She attended business school and later worked at Merry Maids in Sioux City and at Avalunch in Hawarden. She married Larry D. Popken in June 1952. They made their home in Peoria, Illinois, where their three oldest children were born. Following their moved to Sioux City in 1959, they had their three youngest children. Her husband died in 1980. She returned to Hawarden in 1989 to care for her mother.
She was very devoted to her family and she valued time spent with them. She was always active with volunteering for various. organizations. She was a faithful church member, where she assisted in the librarv and as a secretary. She enjoyed gardening, baking, needlework, sewing, traveling, tennis and especially playing bingo.
Survivors are her six children and spouses, Rick and Elizabeth of Overton, Nebraska, Sherry and Perry Sparks of Iowa City, Nancy Rettig of Las Vegas, Nevada, Vicki and Mark Niblo of Blue Springs, Missouri, Jenny Popken of Council Bluffs, and Christopher and Kristy of Sioux City; 13. grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Norman Haines of Duluth, Georgia; and four sisters, Bev Van Buskirk and Donna Peterson, both of Sioux City, and Dolores and her husband, Rusty Wescott, and Barb Kelley, all of Hawarden.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild; a brother and his wife, Que and Dorothy Haines Jr.; two sisters and their husbands, Arlene and John Case and Nina and Cliff Montgomery; a sister-in-law, Becky Haines and three brothers-in-law, Ray L. Peterson, Ray Van Buskirk Sr. and Bill Kelley.
Memorials may be directed to Hawarden Public Library, Hawarden Fire Department, Hawarden Police Department or Hospice and Palliative Care of Siouxland.
