LEO HENTGES RITES TODAY

Last rites for Leo Hentges, deputy sheriff, were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church this morning, and burial was in Calvary Cemetery. The court house was closed this morning as a mark of respect for a former county official.

Funeral services for Leo Hentges, member of a prominent LeMars family who died Monday night at the Veteran’s Hospital in Sioux Falls after a three-week sickness will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church here.

The Rt. Rev. Msgr. J.D. Fisch will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home.

Mr. Hentges was born at LeMars, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Hentges, who were among the early settlers of LeMars.

He served as deputy sheriff for Plymouth County for more than twenty years. Prior to that time he was engaged in the clothing business in Chicago, Omaha, and Carroll, Ia.

Mr. Hentges was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Last Man’s Club, and a longtime active member of the American Legion.

Surviving are three brothers: Dan, of Chicago; William, of Santa Ana; and John A., of LeMars; and four sisters, the Misses Cleo, Helen, Gene and Emma Hentges, all of LeMars.

MILITARY RITES FOR LEO HENTGES

Military rites were held Thus for Leo Hentges, former World War I veteran and longtime member of the American Legion.

Members of Wasmer Post No. 241 American Legion and members of Company K of LeMars attended the funeral in a body in military uniform.

Taps were sounded at the graveside ceremonies and the family was presented with the American flag.

The Rev. Msgr. J. D. Fisch officiated at the funeral high mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and burial was in Calvary cemetery under the direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home.

Pallbearers were Ralph Rippey, Nicholas Coad, J. A. Duster, Paul Traufler, Alwin Becker, and John Hart.

Mr. Hentges, veteran law enforcement officer, had served Plymouth County as deputy sheriff for more than 22 years.
