Junior D. "J.R." Vaughn, 74, of Sioux City, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, surround by family at a local hospital after a brief illness.
Junior was born May 1, 1935 in Le Mars, the son of Vera Roberts Elsen. On 5/5/55 he married Carleene S. Johnson at St. John's Lutheran Church in Merrill. The couple moved to Sioux City Dec. 1, 1967.
J.R. worked at Armour's, I.B.P., D & L Processers and John Morrell meat packing plants. J.R. was member of the U.F.C.W. Unions. He retired May 31, 2002.
J.R. was an avid bowler and was a member of the United States Bowling Congress. He was also an avid Cubs fan. He loved to garden and give his tomatoes and potatoes away to others. He was known for his banana cakes and also shared them with others.
He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sports and activities. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, and riding his bike.
He is survived by his wife, Carleene; three children, Jim Vaughn and his wife, Patti, Don Vaughn and his wife Sue, and Lisa Nugent all of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Lindsay and her husband, Steve Jenkins and their children, Lexie and Logan, Tyler Nugent and Lauren Nugent; four step-grandchildren, Lori and her husband, Jason Bogenreif and their five children, Taylor, Carley, Connor, Carson and Sam; Sheri Rider and her significant other, Michelle and their daughter, Kylie; Julie Keleher and Chris Keleher; and special friends, Wayne and Linda Klundt.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Vera and her husband, Karl Elsen; a brother, LeRoy "Butch" Vaughn; a sister, Dorothy Peterson and a niece and a nephew.
Memorial services were 10 a.m. today (Monday) at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City with Chaplain Stacey Gerhart officiating. Burial was in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation was Sunday with the family present 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family requested that attire for J.R.'s services be casual, blue jeans.
Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Klundt, Jason Klundt, Pete Strom, Joe Klundt, Larry Nugent, Darrell Whittington, Steven Jenkins and Darrell Lundquist.
