Mrs. Jim (Joan) Sitzmann, 77, of Le Mars died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, from complications with Alzheimer's disease, surrounded by her family at home in Le Mars.
The former Joan Elizabeth McColligan was born Feb. 24, 1932 in Sioux City, the daughter of Albert and Katherine (Powers) McColligan. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated in 1950 from Bishop Heelan High School.
She was married to James Sitzmann Jan. 10, 1951, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. Following their marriage the couple farmed south of Le Mars for many years in Lincoln Township. They moved from their farm to Le Mars in November 1998.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a former longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church -- Neptune, rural Hinton.
Her true passion was being with her loving husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years Jim Sitzmann, Sr. of Le Mars; 12 children: Jim Sitzmann, Jr. and his wife Barb of Le Mars, Kathy and her husband Tom Langel of Le Mars, Marty Sitzmann and his wife Marge of Great Falls, Mont., Angie and her husband Dave Erdmann of Le Mars, Rick Sitzmann and his wife Debbie of Hinton, Cindy and her husband Mike O'Kane of Elkhorn, Neb., Alice and her husband Lyle Krienert of Le Mars, Barry Sitzmann and his wife Julie of Le Mars, Jason Sitzmann and his wife Becky of Hinton, Sam Sitzmann and his wife Tera of Ames, Keri Sitzmann-Robey and her husband Stephen Robey of Elkhorn, Neb., and Tami and her husband Jim Thibodeau of Omaha, Neb.; 38 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Alberta and her husband Jim Rosauer of Sacramento, Calif., and Frances Girard of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Bradley; a granddaughter Samantha Jo Erdmann; and two brothers: her twin brother Johnny McColligan and Albert McColligan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Richard Sitzmann celebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Neptune.
Visitations will be at St. James Catholic Church after 3 p.m. today (Monday) where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning at the church for one hour prior to the funeral.
Her six sons will be pallbearers for her funeral.
Arrangements are with the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
A memorial fund will be established in her name with Gehlen Catholic Schools.
