Murl Tonsfeldt, 95, of Granville, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.

Murl was born Nov. 8, 1914, at rural Remsen, the son of August and Mabel (Cook) Tonsfeldt. Murl was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at both rural and public school graduating from Alton High School in 1933. After graduation he farmed with his father. In 1938 he moved to California and worked for Campbell Construction and then Hughes Aircraft in the assembly plant.

On Jan. 19, 1940, he married Lillian Beelner at Madera, Calif. The couple moved back to the Granville area in 1944 where they farmed until his retirement from farming at the age of 85.

Murl was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Remsen.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian of Orange City; one daughter, Sandra M. Landman and her husband L. Charles, Jr. of Winona, Minn.; five grandchildren, Sandra L. Lowenhar and her husband Edward of Belle Mead, N.J., Elizabeth A. Stratton and her husband Bradley of Eden Praire, Minn., L. Charles Landman III and his wife Lynn of Peoria, Ill., Murl Edward Landman and his wife Sarah of Winona, Minn.; six great-gandchildren: Abigail, Cecilia and Nathanial Stratton, Samuel and Lillian Lowenhar, L. Charles Landman, IV; one brother, Clifford Tonsfeldt and his wife Lavonne of Remsen; two sisters, Marian Taylor and her husband Dale of Marcus and Joyce Mercer of Fonda; one sister-in-law, Dee Tonsfeldt-Mulder and her husband Ed of Spirit Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Wallace Tonsfeldt; one brother-in-law, Robert Mercer; and one granddaughter, Lilli Mae Landman.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Remsen Community Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

Casketbearers will be Lyle Schroeder, Dr. Steve Tonsfeldt, James Mayer, John Hansen, John Tonsfeldt and Chris Mercer.

Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.
