The Independent, Hawarden, Sioux, Iowa, USA March 6, 1997

Williams Edmunds, 81, of Hawarden, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at the Hawarden Community hospital.

A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Loren Vogler officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation will begin noon Wednesday, with prayer service at 8 p.m. at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mr. Edmunds was born December 6, 1915 on a farm near Hawarden, the son of Milton and Lena(Klave) Edmunds. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1945 and served with the United States Army during WWII, serving in the Pacific from 1941 to 1945.

William married Gladys Velgersdyk on February 10, 1945. He was employed by the City of Hawarden for 32 years and was also a rural mail carrier.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, working in his lawn and visiting neighbors. The couple spent the past 10 winters in Weslaco, TX.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys; a daughter and her husband, Ardell and Ralph Thomsen of Little Rock, AR; a son, Terry of St. Louis, MO; 4 grandchildren, Natasha (Mrs. Mike Weissman) of Fallon, NV, Nicole, Lindsey and Mark of Little Rock; a great granddaughter, Morgan Weissman; 2 sisters, Helen Peters of Torrance, CA and Essie Tucker of Alcester; 2 brothers, Richard and his wife Bette of Kennewick, WA. and LaVere of Sioux Falls; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim.
