Richard E. Zimmerman, 99, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Abiding by his wishes, Richard has donated his body to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. December 5, 2009 at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ with Reverend Jan Christensen officiating.
Richard Edward Zimmerman, also known as “Zim” or “Dick” was born November 18, 1910 to Richard H. and Elsiena Zimmerman on the family farm in Elgin Township, rural Plymouth County, Iowa. Richard managed the Farmer’s Union Coop in Sioux City for a number of years. In 1947, moving to Hawarden, Iowa and operating the Northwest Iowa Seed Company for several years with his brother-in-law, Joe Mohan. He later returned to farming near Le Mars. In later years, Richard was an active supporter of the Plymouth County Museum in Le Mars. 3 years ago, Richard and Doris moved to The Abbey of Le Mars.
Survivors include his wife Doris Zimmerman of Le Mars; a son, Dennis Zimmerman and his wife Vicky of Duluth, Minnesota; 3 step children: Jim Eyers and his wife Shirley of West Point, Iowa, Christina Eyres and her husband Jeffrey Sales of Waterloo, Iowa, and MaryAnn Eyers of Waterloo, Iowa; a brother, George Zimmerman and his wife Trudy of Coronado, California; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
