Dorothy Hoppe, 86, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 at her home.
Dorothy Alberta Hoppe was born Aug. 20, 1923, on the family farm north of Seney, the daughter of Jake and Bertha (Dambrink) Berkenpas. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Seney United Methodist Church in Seney. She attended country school near Seney.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Elvit Falk in 1941. He was killed in action during World War II. Later, she was united in marriage to Paul Hoppe June 25, 1946, in Le Mars. Dorothy worked for DX Café in Le Mars and also managed the lunch counter at the Livestock Sale Barn north of Le Mars before going to work for Floyd Valley Hospital. Dorothy worked for several years there as a nurses aide.
Dorothy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, for many years.
Dorothy enjoyed gardening and canning. She will be remembered for her baking and her special pies. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, and embroidering dish towels.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include her husband of more than 63 years, Paul of Le Mars; four children: Robert Falk and his wife Dorothy of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary Meyers and her husband Glenn of Loomis, Calif., Dan Hoppe and his wife Jana of Le Mars, and Doug Hoppe and his wife Colleen of Le Mars; eight grandchildren: Jeff Falk and his wife Angela of Mesa, Ariz., Teresa Trout and her husband Lewis of Mesa, Ariz., Jason Falk and his wife Hettie of Phoenix, Ariz., Josh Meyers of Rocklin, Calif., Jana Finarelli and her husband Nick of Santa Rosa, Calif., Chad Hoppe and his wife Jill of Le Mars, Tyler Hoppe and his wife Stephanie of Le Mars, and Justin Hoppe and his wife Linette of Theodore, Ala.; 12 great-grandchildren and one great-granddaughter yet to be born; a sister: Edith Renken of Le Mars; three sisters-in-law: Lillian Berkenpas of Le Mars, Marge Berkenpas of Las Vegas, Nev., and Anita Berkenpas of Le Mars; a brother-in-law: Merlin Singer of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her father- and mother-in-law: Joseph and Bertha Hoppe; her first husband, Elvit Falk; six brothers: Leonard Berkenpas, Arthur Berkenpas, William Berkenpas, Raymond Berkenpas, Norman Berkenpas, and Henry Berkenpas; five sisters: Lois Singer, Alice Jennings, Jean Van Roekel, Della Berkenpas, and Frances Leonard; two sisters-in-law: Dolly Berkenpas and Charlene Berkenpas; and a grandson: Christopher Hoppe.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Marsha Young, A.i.M., from St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday with the family present after 5 p.m., all at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made in Dorothy's name to Hospice of Siouxland.
