LaVon M. Franz, 83, of Le Mars, died Friday morning, Nov. 27, 2009, at Good Samaritan Society-Le Mars.

LaVon Marlys Franz, the first-born daughter of Esther Alma (Yost) and Burton Detloff Franz, was born Sept. 9, 1926, in Hastings, Neb. She attended the Sutton Public School and received her high school diploma in 1944. Following graduation, LaVon enrolled in the nursing program at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Neb.

After receiving her registered nursing degree in 1947, LaVon began her nursing career in Denver, Colo., where she continued working for 25 years. During this same time, she worked for private physicians and area hospitals, including Fitzsimmons Veteran's Hospital.

LaVon relocated to Idaho, and continued her career in nursing for the next 25 years at the Coeur d'Alene Hospital and retirement centers in the area.

LaVon was active in her church and various Christian women's groups. She loved to sing in various choral groups and in church choirs in both, Denver and Coeur d' Alene.

She traveled extensively and thoroughly enjoyed vacationing in the United States, Hawaii and Europe. LaVon was an avid reader and found great joy in the companionship of her pet cats.

In 2001, LaVon moved to Le Mars to be near her sister, Valda.

LaVon will be lovingly remembered by her sister and brother-in-law, Valda and Robert Embree of Le Mars; her two nephews and their wives, Dr. Marlowe and Diane Embree and Dr. Rodney and Carla Embree and their children, Isaac and Eden; and many cousins.

Preceding LaVon in death are her parents, Burton and Esther Franz.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Jason Larson of the United Methodist Church in Le Mars presiding.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home, one hour prior to LaVon's service on Tuesday.

Inurnment will be at a later date in the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton, Neb.
