Fred Eilers, a well know resident of LeMars, died at his
home 812 Frist street, on Saturday from heart failure and
hardening of the arteries. Mr. Eilers had been in failing
health all winter. Three weeks ago a fire occurred at his
residence and assisting in extinguishing the flames he
caught a heavy cold and in the past two weeks his condition
became serious.Fred Eilers was a native of Germany and was born in the
province of Oldenburg on January 3, 1848, and grew to
manhood in his native country. He came to America in 1870
and shortly after his arrival went to Mt. Olive IL, and
worked on a farm and followed the a vocation of farming
until a few years ago, when he retired from active work.He married in Illinois on March 1, 1873, to Miss Maria
Johnson. They came from Illinois to Iowa in 1902 and
located on a farm near Ireton, where they lived until 1909,
when they came to LeMars to spend the evening of their
lives. To their union thirteen children were born.With the widow nine children survive to mourn the loss of a
good husband and father. Sons and daughters are: Herman
Eilers, of Ireton; Meint Eilers of Craig; Gerrit Eilers of
Hawarden; John Eilers of Craig; Ed and Fred Eilers of
Lemars; Mrs. Anna Schulz, Mrs. Lena Becker and Miss Marie
Eilers. The deceased is also survived by one sister Mrs.
Rudolph Winher of DeValls Bluff Ark, and brothres, George
Eilers of Lynd MN; and John Eilers of Douglas IL. Two
brothers proceeded him in death and the whereabouts of
another brother supposed to be living in unknown.
The funeral services will be held this afternoon at St.
John’s Lutheran church at two o’clock with Rev. Vollmar
officiating.Mr. Eilers was familiar figure on the streets of LeMars the
past few years. He was of a jovial sunny disposition and
made many friends among whom he will be missed.
