Pioneer Woman Dies (formerly of the Ireton IA area some
years ago)

Mrs. Fred Eilers, a well know resident on this vicinity for
many years, died at her home in Craig, on Tuesday night
following a brief illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Eilers lived
in LeMars for several years but of late resided in Craig
with relatives.

The deceased was born in Ost Friesland, Germany, on Dec 15,
1851, her maiden name was Maria Johnson. When a child she
came with relatives to this country. They settled near
Mount Olive IL, where she received her early education and
grew to young womanhood.

She was united in marriage with Fred Eilers at Litchfield,
IL, and they lived near there for a number of years. About
twenty-two years ago they came to this section of the
country and purchased a farm five miles south of Ireton.
Fourteen years ago they came to LeMars where they made their
home in their declining years. Mr. Eilers died in 1915.
They were the parents of a large family, thirteen children
having been born to them. Four of the children died in
childhood. Mrs. Eilers leaves to mourn the loss of a
devoted mother, six sons, and three daughters, who are:
Herman Eilers of Chester SD; Mike Eilers of Grant Tsp (Ply.
Co.) Garret of Hawarden; John and Frederick of Craig; G. E.
Eilers of Lemars; Mrs. Emil Schultz and Mrs. H. DeVall of
Craig, and Mrs. Emil Becker of Brunswick NE. She is also
survived by five brothers and one sister who are: Michael
Johnson of Ireton; Richard of LeMars; John and Charles of
Craig; Edward of Del Rapids SD and Mrs. Onno Croon of Craig.

Mrs. Eilers was well know and had a large circle of friends
in Plymouth and Sioux Counties, and enjoyed the respect and
esteem of the community. She was active in church work and
while a resident of LeMars was for many years vice-president
of the Ladies Aid society of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

She was a devoted wife and mother and a good neighbor,
always ready and willing to lend assistance in good times
and when sorrows came.

The funeral well be held Saturday. A brief service will be
held in Craig, and services will be held at 2 o’clock at
St. John’s Lutheran church in this city, and the interment
made in the City cemetery (LeMars) where her husband is
buried. Rev. Wm. Zibell, of Craig and Rev. J. J. Vollmer of
LeMars will have charge of the services.
