LIFE DEVOTED TO MUSIC ART
MRS. LUELLA CLARK EMERY, FORMER LE MARS WOMAN DIES IN CALIFORNIA
Mrs. Luella Clark Emery, a former well known resident of Le Mars, died at Long Beach, Cal., March 13. The funeral was held at that place Saturday, March 15. Death was caused from a stroke of paralysis she suffered some weeks ago.
Mrs. Emery was one of the pioneer women of Le Mars, coming here in the seventies with her husband Col. J. M. Emery. They were prominent in the business and social life of the community in the early days. Col. J. M. Emery was a veteran of the Civil War, and served as postmaster in Le Mars in the early eighties, and was at one time on the staff of the Le Mars Sentinel. Col. Emery was active in politics and received a government in Indian territory through the influence of the late I. S. Struble, who was congressman from this district from 1882 to 1890.
Mrs. Emery was a musician of more than ordinary ability, and give instructions in that art in Le mars for a number of years, and as a pianist took part in all musical affairs and concerts while a resident of Le Mars.
She and her husband made their home in Chicago for a number of years after leaving Le Mars. Col. Emery died some years ago, and since his death, Mrs. Emery has lived in California. Mrs. Emery assiduously kept up her profession of music all her life and was known as a brilliant pianist.
She is survived by a son, Clark Emery and a daughter Mrs. Mary Luella [one line is blackened] Smith college, Northhampton, Mass.
The Los Angels Times says:
The funeral for Mrs. Luella Clark Emery, well known in Long Beach and Los Angeles music circles was conducted here this morning at the McFayden Mission. Mrs. Emery died Thursday at her home at 1725 East Second street, after an illness of several weeks. She was 78 years of age.
D. W. Fahs, of Wilmington, in whose church years ago, in Iowa, Mrs. Emery had been organist, conducted the services. The body was later cremated. The deceased was born in Cincinnati, O., and came to Long Beach twelve years ago. She formerly conducted the musical department of the Ebell Club, and as a teacher and accompanist gained an enviable reputation. She is survived by a daughter, son, two grandchildren and a brother, John Duncan Clark, of Los Angeles.
