John L. Felts, 75, of Le Mars, died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness.

John was born Aug. 9, 1934, at Paducah, Ky., the son of Herschal and Mary Louise (Luigs) Felts. He was raised in Paducah, Ky., and graduated from St. John's Catholic School in 1951.

In 1953 he moved to Iowa where he met and married Shirley Wurth Nov. 24, 1953, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen. He was a farm laborer for six years. He then worked for Plymouth County for six years, and then became self-employed in a corn shelling and trucking business, where he was still active until his health forced him to retire.

He enjoyed being with family and friends, camping, traveling, socializing with anyone, and most of all spending time with his grandkids.

John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Neptune, Catholic Order of Foresters of Remsen, Knights of Columbus and Eagles Club both of Le Mars.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Shirley Felts of rural Le Mars; four sons, Gary Felts of Kingsley, Rick Felts and his wife, Janell of rural Le Mars, Kevin Felts and his wife, Jackie of rural Le Mars, Keith Felts and his wife, Lisa of Sioux City; one daughter, Pam Heitmann and her husband Jon of Holstein; nine grandchildren, Jeff and Brandon Felts, Penni McIntosh, Jessie and Dustin Heitmann, Colby and Austin Felts, Deianira and Seth Felts; three great-grandchildren, Ayden and Carter Heitmann, Kendyl McIntosh; one brother, Charles Felts and his wife, Kathy of Paducah, Ky.; four sisters, Rose Margaret Caraway of Hernando, Miss., Maggie Harding and her husband, Russell of Lake Worth, Fla., Martha Wurth and her husband Bill of Remsen, and Velma Felts and special friend Lee King of Paducah, Ky.; several Iin-laws; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hershal and Mary Felts, and one sister, Francis Joann Felts at the age of 5.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 4 p.m. today (Monday). There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by a Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus rosary all at the Fisch Funeral Home and Monument in Remsen.

Casketbearers will be Jeff and Brandon Felts, Penni McIntosh, Jessie and Dusty Heitmann, Colby, Austin, Deianira and Seth Felts.

Honorary bearers will be Brianne and Stephanie Felts, Derek McIntosh, Brandon Kies and Amanda Heitmann

Catholic Order of Foresters Honorary Bearers will be Bob, Chet, Marty and Mike Wurth.
