Marlene Mary Mylan, 78, of West Des Moines entered her eternal life Oct. 8, 2009 at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center from complications of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Marlene was born June 29, 1931 in Le Mars, the daughter of Dr. Floyd Alvin and Bertha Amelia Mylan. Marlene was raised in the Remsen area and attended grade school and one year of high school in Remsen. She then transferred and completed three years of high school in Le Mars.

She was a graduate of Morningside College, earning her master's degree in elementary education from the University of South Dakota.

She taught kindergarten for 31 years with the last 24 years spent in the West Des Moines Public School System at Phoenix and Clive Schools.

Marlene was an associate member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Le Mars, National Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, P.E.O., Chapter M.A., past president of the West Des Moines Women's Club and a former board member of the West Des Moines Historical Society.

She enjoyed children, music, singing, animals, fishing and working with her friends on various charity projects.

She enjoyed planning several reunions with her classmates of the Class of '49 of Le Mars High School.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Floyd and Bertha (Rann) Mylan of Remsen.

Visitation will be at 2 p.m., today (Tuesday) at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church, 720 Grand Ave., Des Moines. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 3 p.m.

Also, a prayer service and viewing will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen, with burial following at the Remsen City Cemetery. The Mylan family was longtime members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.
