Harry "Bud" Kahl, 84, of Remsen, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at his home in Remsen.

Bud was born June 29, 1925, on the family farm near Remsen, the son of Harry and Margret (Grage) Kahl. Bud grew up there on the family farm southeast of Remsen. He attended country school and started his life farming with his mother Margret, brother Henry and sister Hulda. In 1950 Bud was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Colorado. After his discharge from the Army Bud came back to Iowa and continued farming.

On May 26, 1979 he married Sharon Ahrens of Lakefield, Minn., and moved to a farm just west of the family farm and continued farming. Bud also worked for the Klingbeil Mink Farm until 2006.

The couple moved into town in 1982. Sharon died Nov. 12, 2007.

Bud was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 220 and the Sportsmans Club all of Remsen.

Survivors include his step-children: Ted Olson and his wife Sandy of Durham, N.C., Chuck Olson and his wife Deb of Omaha, Neb., Jeff Olson and his wife Sue of rural Le Mars, Nancy Pratt and her husband Bruce of Fremont, Neb., William Ahrens of Alcoa, Tenn., Craig Ahrens of Joplin, Mo., and Victor Ahrens and his wife Sheila of Remsen. Bud also has 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his parents; three sisters, Minni Kahl, Ema Behrens and Hulda Kahl; and three brothers, Henry, Bill and Ed Kahl.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Remsen Community Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen. Visitation will resume Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. until service time at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Remsen. Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 of Remsen.Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be Wayne Behrens, Craig Christman, Ken Dines, Tom Letsche, Frank Harvey, Dennis Poeckes and David Tilbury.
