Jim Buryanek, 77, of rural Westfield, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
James Thomas Buryanek was born March 27, 1932, on the family farm near Westfield, the son of Adolph and Bessie (Kohout) Buryanek. Jim attended school in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School in 1950. In April 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country during the Korean Conflict. While stationed in Korea, he attained the rank of Military Police Officer. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
Upon returning to the states, he went to work for Lampert's Lumberyard in Merrill and Le Mars, working as the assistant manager for four years. He was united in marriage to Delores Beitelspacher June 4, 1957 at Christ Lutheran Church, Grant Township, rural Le Mars. In March of 1958, Jim and Delores moved to the family farm near Westfield and began their many years of farming. In 1994, they retired from farming but continued to live near the homestead.
Jim was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, having served two terms as Church Council President. He was also a longtime member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron.
Through the years, the joys of nature, farming, gardening, and the great outdoors was what Jim lived for. He also loved to go coon hunting with his grandchildren and his favorite dog, "Rock." He loved the family trips to Roy Lake, S.D.
Jim was an avid reader of newspapers and magazines, many of which he read front to back.
His greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. He will greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of more than 52 years, Delores of rural Westfield; three children: Cathy Bobier and her husband Craig of rural Westfield, Linda Ward and her husband Tom of Sioux City, and Jeff Buryanek and his wife Amy of rural Westfield; nine grandchildren: Curt Bobier, Cal Bobier, Catie Bobier, Jessica Chesher, Christine Chesher, Katie Buryanek, Tyler Buryanek, Bessie Buryanek, and Jimmy Buryanek; a brother, Leonard Buryanek and his wife Tess of rural Westfield; five sisters: Vera Diediker of Laurel, Neb., Millie Wetrosky and her husband Clyde of Pequot Lake, Minn., Betty Philips and her husband Bob of Augusta, Wis., Mary Osborn and her husband Roger of Kellogg, and Marlis Asprey and her husband Frank of West Sacramento, Calif.; a sister-in-law. Anne Buryanek of Hawarden; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law: H.H. and Louise Beitelspacher; a sister, Helen Tindall and her husband Buster; a brother, Frank Buryanek; a sister-in-law, Marlene Buryanek; and two brothers-in-law: Arnold Bollhoefer and Donald Diediker.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at Trinity Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Akron, with the Rev. Carla Nelson officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Burial will be at a later date in the Westfield Cemetery in Westfield. Visitation with the family present was from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, all at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
