Laura M. Schreiner, 71, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry, Mich., while on vacation.

The former Laura Mae Vondrak was born Aug. 23, 1938, in Hinton, the daughter of William and Sophie (Meyer) Vondrak. Laura grew up on a farm near Hinton and graduated in 1956 from Hinton High School.

She married John Schreiner Feb. 8, 1958, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City. Following their marriage the couple lived and farmed south of Remsen until moving to Le Mars in 1996. Laura also worked at Wal-Mart, Bomgaars, Hannah's Treasures and Beads in the Back, and at Vander Meer's Bakery. Her husband John died Feb. 28, 2000.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars and the Christian Mothers Society.

She loved flowers, birds, crocheting, gardening, reading, her grandkids, and traveling on bus tours with her best friend Patty Vondrak.

Survivors include her children, their spouses and their children: Janet and Terry Wuebben, Mathew, Michael and Alex of Hartington, Neb., Steve and Marie Schreiner, Josh of Le Mars, Bill and Shannan Schreiner, Nick, Jonathan and Allison of Remsen, and Ron and Lila Schreiner, Katlynn, Brady and Dalton of Sioux Center; a sister, Rosemary and Gene Woolworth of Le Mars; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Martin and Marie Schreiner of Maurice; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John Schreiner; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Mary and Ted Eickholt, Roland and Eleanor Schreiner, and Elizabeth and Ernest Kotalik; and three nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Matt Hewitt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation will be anytime after 3 p.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be at the church Friday morning for one hour prior to the funeral. The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting Laura's family with arrangements.

Her 10 grandchildren will be pallbearers: Mathew, Michael and Alex Wuebben, and Josh, Nick, Jonathan, Allison, Katlynn, Brady and Dalton Schreiner.
