Dorothy Whitaker

Dorothy Lucille Whitaker, 99, of Hamilton, Ill., died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at Montebello Health Care Center in Hamilton.

Born Sept. 15, 1909, in Akron, she was the daughter of Howard and Estella Tucker McCorkell. On Aug. 1, 1928, she married Charles Whitaker in LeMars. He died Aug 11, 1975.

Mrs. Whitaker was a teacher in Akron. She prepared meals for the Ferris School System, Hancock County, Ill., for over 20 years. She worked through Green Thumb at Hancock County Mental Health Department in Carthage, Ill., and for a physician's office in Hamilton. She was a nurse's aide at Memorial Hospital in Carthage. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Hamilton.

Survivors include seven sons, Melvin E. Whitaker and Kenneth W. "Duck" Whitaker, both of Hamilton, Lowell E. Whitaker of Dallas, Stanley E. Whitaker and Michael W. Whitaker, both of Keokuk, Jerry L. Whitaker of Hickory, N.C., and Billy J. Whitaker of Carthage; two sisters, Lois Neilsen of rural Akron and Jeanne Esterberg of Alexandria, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; over 30 great-grandchildren; and the niece and nephew they raised, Lorraine Crabill and Virgil Whitaker.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, five sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Lamporte-St.Clair Funeral Home in Hamilton, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Whitaker will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Hamilton, with the Rev Julie Azbell, Shawn Whitaker and Scott Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage.
